The NI is a professional Institution and Learned Society. This enables us to offer a range of membership grades to meet your requirements.

Professional membership

For those seeking recognition for their professional status within the nuclear industry the following grades carry with them post nominals and the opportunity to become registered with the Engineering Council (ECUK

Applicants with degrees in science or maths at the appropriate level may be eligible for registration by a single stage process as long as they can demonstrate that they have the same engineering knowledge, competences and commitment as someone with an engineering degree at the appropriate level.  See guide for applicants for more details 

  • Fellow (FNucI)
  • Member (MNucI)
Fellows and Members are characterised by their ability to develop appropriate solutions to engineering problems, using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change. They might develop and apply new technologies, promote advanced designs and design methods, introduce new and more efficient production techniques, marketing and construction concepts, pioneer new engineering services and management methods. They are variously engaged in technical and commercial leadership and possess effective interpersonal skills.
The grade of Fellow is normally only awarded to people in senior positions who have made a significant contribution to the profession. 

Successful candidates in most cases will be eligible for registration as Chartered Engineer (CEng) and also as European Engineer (EurIng) if desired.

The standard educational requirements for CEng is an accredited integrated MEng degree but an accredited Bachelors degree with honours in engineering or technology, plus either an appropriate Masters degree accredited or approved by a professional engineering Institute, or appropriate further learning to Masters level is also acceptable.
  • Associate Member (AMNucI)
Associate Members are characterized by their ability to act as exponents of today’s technology through creativity and innovation.  To this end, they maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology, and may undertake engineering design, development, manufacture, construction and operation. They are variously engaged in technical and commercial management and possess effective interpersonal skills.
Successful candidates in most cases will be eligible for registration as Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

The standard educational requirements for IEng are an accredited Bachelors degree in engineering or technology or a Higher National Certificate or Diploma or a Foundation Degree in engineering or technology, plus appropriate further learning to degree level.
  • Engineering Technician (TNucI) 
Technician Members are involved in applying proven techniques and procedures to the solution of practical engineering problems. They carry supervisory or technical responsibility, and are competent to exercise creative aptitudes and skills within defined fields of technology. Professional Engineering Technicians contribute to the design, development, manufacture, commissioning, operation or maintenance of equipment, processes or services.  Professional Engineering Technicians are also required to apply safe systems of work.
Successful candidates in most cases will be eligible for registration as Engineering Technicians (Eng Tech).
Typical educational requirements include National Certificate or National Diploma in Engineering or Construction & the Built Environment, an approved qualification in engineering or construction at level 6 in the Scottish Qualifications and Credit Framework and the City & Guilds Higher Professional Diploma in Engineering. •Qualifications in similar areas providing they are assessed as equivalent by the Institute are also acceptable.

Learned Society membership

We also offer membership for those who have an interest in the sector or are starting on their careers within the nuclear industry. For those people we offer

  • Learned Member
    This class is open to those who have an interest in nuclear science, engineering or technology.  This class in open to anyone and does not depend on any qualifications being held.
  • Graduate membership
    The candidate should satisfy the academic requirements for Member or Associate Membership, and be undergoing training or engaged in professional work in the nuclear industry.
  • Student Membership
    Those over the age of 16 years with an interest in nuclear technology
  • Retired Learned Member
    A Learned Member who is above the offiicial retirement age for the UK

Through our education and training activities and by providing opportunities for networking the NI is able to assist its members in progressing through the membership grades as their careers develop.

Also the NI welcomes support from companies within the industry via the company membership scheme the details of which can be found here , you can apply using the form or on-line.

Membership will last for a calendar year from the date on which you joined. You will be sent a reminder two months before your membership requires renewal.

Should you wish, you can also pay for subsequent years membership via a Direct Debit payment, but you must download and complete this form at least 3 months before the end of your membership year.
